About

I’m Kyla Bea - twenty something graphic designer, city politics buff, crafter, thrift shopper, street fashion addict, homebody and black tea aficionado.

Mister is my husband. Ash & Mal are the bad puppies ruling our lives. We live in the middle of the Canadian Prairies under the biggest sky I’ve ever seen. Last year I finished school, started working in the "real world", got married & moved into a 99 year old hobbit house.

This is where I make sense of it all.

The Problem With Puppies

Last week I received a phone call from the lady we bought our new puppy Ash from, asking if we would be interested in taking on his brother. He was the last of the litter who was left and at this point just needed a home…..so the question was would we consider taking his brother on.

I’m already a vegetarian, so I’m an easy target for this stuff. Would we consider it? Let’s weight this out…. it’s a year earlier than we had thought we would be getting another dog, a month and a half before the wedding, two and a half weeks after we moved into our first home which we still need to replace the windows on and do all sorts of little work projects to, and two and a half weeks into our relationship with Puppy Number One….the question really was could we even handle two 13 week old puppies?

The week was all frantic phone calls, e-mails, budgeting, calls to the vet, calls to dog boarding places, calls to obedience schools trying to figure out if there was any way we could do this. We’ve picked over the wedding budget, received quotes for most of the house work we need to have done….and it sorta looked okay. You know, except for the whole “We have two puppies” thing.

Still undecided, I figured it would be worth it to go see the other puppy at least and see how they got along. My sense was that Ash was missing on dog play and being a dominant guy could get edgy if we didn’t have someone with him to mellow him out. So we loaded into the car to road trip  to the little town where the lady was, and when we got into the back yard we fell in love.

And even better, the dogs fell in love.

So here for you us the newest addition to the family: Mal. He’s the goofy one on the left.

85% house trained and 100% cute as hell!

(and happy long weekend to any Canadians out there!)

P.S. Maybe you would be up for guest blogging on my new project? We will be having guest posts from other dog owners and I know that it would be interesting with two pups now!

  • Wow! I’ve been a reader for the past few days but had to comment on this entry. Congratulations on TWO puppies! I am currently dying for a dog. As I was reading through this post, I was hoping and wishing and hoping that you were going to take on the brother, too!

  • Jamie - I would *love* to guest blog, I’m all about the puppies right now, and about training/house breaking/keeping aggressive dogs and over excited children out of arms reach of them….as well as how strange it is to have a ‘rarer’ breed of dog. That would be lots of fun! I e-mailed you already, but just let me know the details and I’m in!

Lauren - Thanks so much for de-lurking! The puppy kisses were definitely worth the wait, and I’m adding you to my google reader!

  • Oh they are so freakin cute together! That’s good that he will have a playmate, unlike cats, dogs love to be together, it’s the whole pack thing. Awwwwww. Cuteness! Speaking of cute, you look radiant in that photo!

  • I’m so glad you got the other puppy! Congrats!

When we adopted our kitty a few years ago, she had a sibling and looking back, we wish we had gotten them both. Our kitty has the best personality and I just imagine her sister must have too.

  • Le Tigre - Aw thank you I think that’s my “What have we got ourselves into?!!” expression

Amypurple - Thanks so much! That’s sad about the other kitty that you didn’t get, but I’m sure that your guy is happy to have all of your attention!

  • I’m seriously about to run out and get a puppy now…who cares if my building doesn’t allow them! what could possibly be cuter than one adorable puppy? TWO ADORABLE PUPPIES!

I was just watching an episode of SCRUBS where a woman was having heart failure due to a broken heart - and one of JD’s ideas was to dump a box of kittens on people to cheer them up. It was adroable, trust me.

November must look very relaxing to you right about now…

  • So glad that Jamie got to you about guest posting. I can’t wait to hear more stories about the puppers.

The way we manage housebreaking is by first creating a den space for the puppy in a crate. They quickly make it their bed and do everything they can to keep from using the washroom in it. Next, we throw massive parties whenever the pup does its stuff outside. Then we crate until the puppy really has to go, let it outside, then have an hour or two of playtime before it’s back in the crate.

As we get more successful, the playtime is extended until we rarely need the crate anymore.

Easier said than done though. I’d much rather be able to cuddle my puppy all day rather than have him crated.

  • Jenny - LOL Here here - November is looking super relaxing!!

    Brookem - I know, it’s terrible…. = )

Ben - That’s a great set up! We had our guys in a pen with their crates and being loose in the pen during the day was giving them too much room to do the wrong things. We’ve started doing exactly what you describe here, it’s slow going but I think it’s probably the best way to get them really housebroken. As we’ve been going along I’ve found that the urgency with which they need to go is greatly diminishing too, which is a good sign!
