Bruce Willis and Samuel Jackson
Two actors that both appear in the same movie more than twice that is not a trilogy or a serial movie is very rare in the film industry. This is maybe because there are a lot of actors/actresses that are blossoming nowadays or maybe because actors hate each other’s guts just like the ‘thief hates another thief’ thing. But two such great actors rise above the rest. Bruce Willis and Samuel Jackson, two equally great actors, have both appeared in three successful films and another one where Bruce had a cameo role. Aside from the films they were both starred, Bruce and Samuel also have another commonality – they are both bald.
Their first film together was National Lampoon’s: Loaded Weapon 1 (1993) starring Samuel Jackson and Emilio Estevez. Bruce Willis only had an uncredited cameo role as his Die Hard series character John McClane. Based on the film’s title, it was set to have sequels but this was not pushed through because of the films poor box office performance.
Pulp Fiction (1994) with Uma Thurman and John Travolta was Bruce and Samuel’s second film together. The film was blockbuster success domestically and worldwide and has helped in Bruce’s seemingly plummeting acting career. Director Quentin Tarantino casted Bruce because he said he needed an actor that had a look of a 1950s actor and that no other star has that look. Samuel’s role in the film was not as modest as Bruce’s which probably meant his salary was slightly higher. Pulp Fiction’s rich and eclectic dialogues mixed with humor and violence made it so popular making it one of the top 10 must watch movies.
When it comes to salary and star status, the actors’ next film Die Hard with a Vengeance (1995) made them both equal in every right with almost the same duration of scenes. Bruce reprised his role as John McClane while Samuel played the cynical Zeus Carver. They are also joined by the English actor Jeremy Irons which portrayed the antagonist Simon Gruber. The film was a remarkable success grossing over $300 million worldwide. Bruce and Samuel’s chemistry was noticeable on screen and may have lead M. Night Shyamalan to cast them both on the lead roles of his film.
The psychological thriller Unbreakable (2000) was Bruce’s 2nd film with M. Night, the first one being The Sixth Sense (1999). This was Samuel’s first time collaboration with M. Night and will probably be followed with rumors of a sequel. The film explored the parallel world of humans and mythological superheroes. It grossed over $200 million in box office worldwide plus an additional $95 million in DVD sales. The successful DVD sales are probably caused by the age old dream of people to attain superhuman powers.
