2. Times Higher Education World University Rankings – this is another widely acclaimed ranking site. Universities are ranked primarily according to peer reviews. Both this site and Academic Ranking of World Universities ranks schools all over the world, but they publish a top ten list for the US.
3. The Princeton Review – Princeton Review publishes a widely recognized college review each year. They collect objective data on the colleges, including dropout rates and academic offerings, as well as interview students.
4. College Prowler – This site uses the students at the colleges to do the rankings. Schools are ranked on academics, diversity, housing, athletics, food and nightlife.
5. US News – This is one of the most watched rankings. Schools on the list are ranked by academic offering, graduation rates, financial and faculty resources, SAT scores, retention rates, peer reputation, alumni giving, etc.
When you’re reviewing colleges, it might first be better to make a list of which colleges you’re interested in attending, based on location, affordability, and field of study.
Once you’ve narrowed down your list of possible schools, check their rankings, particularly in your field of study. This can help you narrow your list even further. Then, also look at things like campus safety, housing, dining, and social life to see if you think the school would be a fit for you.
It’s not wise for every student to simply look for the top ten schools in the country. Harvard ranks number one on almost every list this year. Not everyone can afford to go to Harvard. Not everyone can get in and Harvard, while number one overall, is not number one in every field of study.
So, consider the overall rankings, but consider your own personal situation when reviewing colleges. The best college, after all, is the one who can teach you the most in your field of study and the one that you’ll love.

One thing to avoid is choosing a topic that is too difficult.
