Curtains: Types and Applications

Curtains…they are the décor that can either make or break a room.  To say “they come in a wide variety of styles and colors” would be a serious understatement.  They are, however, made from a number of great materials; and some of them are more functional than decorative, and vice-versa.

Some of the most common materials are:

  • Cotton
  • Lace and Sheers
  • Silk
  • Polyester
  • Chenille
  • Tapestry Fabric
  • Thermal – have coatings to enhance energy savings by reducing heat loss
  • Blackout – specialized backing to prevent passage of light through the material

From a design perspective, the possibilities are literally endless. Chenille’s, Damasks and sheer are considered a few of the richest, most-upscale materials. Jacquards and woven fabrics, tied-in with silk, are also in class by themselves. Not only can you specify the exact material mix, you can also choose from thousands of designs or even create your very own—which is especially true on many online venues.

There is one thing that should be addressed; blinds or shades can be easy, functional and beautiful by themselves sometimes. Beware though: too many people make the mistake of throwing up a cheap set of nondescript blinds just to provide privacy and block-out some sunlight, and that is fine sometimes. However, you should know the benefits that curtains/draperies have over blinds, or how they can even add to them.

The right set of window treatments adds tons of flair to practically any room, they can even  bring out the beauty of the more-luxuriously crafted blinds or shades

Blinds can have the effect of the “office look”; whereas you probably want more of an inviting, individualistic “homey-look”.

Draperies are generally easier to maintain, easier to clean. They are generally very easy to measure and fit, and can be hung from a variety of great-looking curtain rods—that come in an equal number of shapes, sizes and materials themselves.

Shades can be dust magnets and cause allergy sufferers even more concern.

In addition, you have no lack of accessories to choose from: tassels, ornamental ribbons and valances are just some—to name a few.
