Get A Sleeping Bag Liner to Protect Your Sleeping Bag

No matter how well prepared you are for your camping trip, there are several items that you really need.  A sleeping bag liner is one of these.  Being outdoors means you’re going to be sweatier and grimier than usual, especially if you’re hauling heaving camping gear like a large tent around. You don’t want to limit your activities during the day, but you do want a clean, dry place to sleep at night. Your sleeping bag is an investment and one of the most important pieces of camping equipment that you own. You want to keep it comfortable and prolong its life.

The loft of a sleeping bag, technically the amount of volume per ounce, is what makes it warm and fluffy. Regardless of whether this filling consists of down or synthetic fibers, exposing it to perspiration, dirt, and body oils inhibits its function. The areas of the bag that usually suffer the most are the top and bottom parts.

It’s not unusual for the head and face to get oily during outdoor activities.  The feet do your trekking along the trails; they’re going to perspire and pick up grime along the way. By using a sleeping bag liner, you will not only protect your sleeping bag from moisture and dirt, but you won’t need to wash it as often either.  This will prolong the life of the bag and help to maintain its loft.

You have several options when choosing a liner. Among these are Slumberjack SlumberWick, Mummy Sleeping Bag Liner, Outbound Silk Sleeping Bag Liner (rectangular), and Ledmark Industries Sleeping Bag Liner (poly/cotton).

The choice of a liner is really based on personal preference. Silk liners are comfortable but they can quickly become sticky when absorbing body oil and perspiration. Cotton liners retain moisture and don’t dry out as quickly as some other fabrics.

Clothing worn during the day may feel dry and still contain perspiration.  In addition to adding a liner to your bag, make sure you change into clean clothes before going to bed.  Your body and your sleeping bag will thank you!
