Portable Ice Fishing Shelters: Protecting Yourself from the Elements

When buying your ice fishing equipment, nothing is more important then portable ice fishing shelters. Protecting yourself from the elements should be your number one priority when fishing. How else would you be able to concentrate and function on ice fishing if you are uncomfortable in your hut? Here are a few tips to take in mind when you are buying this piece of ice fishing gear.

Did you know that the color of your tent makes a big difference in its performance? Darker colors are generally better for ice fishing. These darker colors will absorb more sunlight and keep your tent better insulated. As well as insulating the hut, they will block out unwanted light inside the shelter. A darker inside means better sight fishing and view of underwater cameras.

The thickness of portable ice fishing shelters also play a factor. A thicker hut will provide you with better protection and insulation. This will sacrifice portability in the process, generally these huts can weight up to 60 pounds and take some time to drag or disassemble. Thinner huts offer the portability and breathability thicker huts lack. This comes at the cost of protection. Due to its light weight it is subject-able to the weather elements.

Along the lines of portability, the set-up and break down time of a shelter is key. No one wants to spend half their ice fishing trip setting up and taking down their shelter. Huts have the capability of being set up and taken down with in seconds, however, there is a down side to this. Durability is directly proportionate to its set up and take down time usually. This means the faster you can set up your hut, the less protection your hut may offer.

This is just a few factors that come into play when buying portable ice fishing shelters. Finding the perfect balance between these factors will lead you to your perfect shelter.
