Replacing a Carpet Floor

A carpet floor has a unique look and feel that many people prefer when it comes to home flooring. Although carpet has experienced a decline in popularity due to allergies, it can still be found in many homes across America. If you are looking to replace your carpet, it might be something that you can do yourself. Of course if you want to renovate your entire house with carpet, then that’s a job best left to the professionals. But if one room is all you need then all it might take is a couple of willing friends and you can have the job done within a day.

Carpets can build up a lot of dirt and dust over time, so the first thing you’ll want to do is put on your face mask and give the room a good vacuuming. And make sure that the room is clear of everything but your flooring supplies because the job will get really cluttered if you aren’t organized. When the old carpet is clean, you will cut it off in sections and roll it out of place. This is where the dirt can really fly so make sure you aren’t breathing in all the particles in the air. Remove the rolls of carpet from the room and make sure they are well out of the way. If the underlying floor needs a quick clean too, you can use something like a Shark steam cleaner which will work well on the floor while being gentle at the same time.

Before installing your new carpet you will need to hammer in tackless strip on the perimeter of your wall, not including the doorway. Once that is in place you can roll in your new carpet and start attaching it to the tackless, making sure to live about six inches on the end for some leeway in sizing. If you need to cut your carpet to fit into certain areas then do it with a sharp knife and lay it tight across the downward bearing while attaching it with seaming glue. And when everything is in place you will use a knee-kick to attach the carpet to the tackless strip. The kick will effectively grab onto the carpet with one end, and attach it to the strip with the other. So make sure everything is tight and cut off the excess trim will a wall cutter. After a only a few hours, you will have yourself  a new carpet to match whatever look you’re going for in that room.
