The List of Green Tea’s Health Giving Properties Is a Long One

The list of health benefits associated with green tea is a long one. Green tea is derived from the same Camelia sinensis plant as black tea, but does not undergo a fermentation process. The leaves are simply steamed with the result that green tea maintains high levels of catechins (in particular Epigallocatechin gallate or EGCG), which have potent antioxidant qualities. Antioxidants work by boosting the immune system and protecting cells against disease causing free radicals which health professional believe contribute to the development of illnesses such as cancer and heart disease. Green tea also has anti-inflammatory, anti-bacteria and anti-fungal properties.

Listed below are the primary health giving properties of green tea:

  • Cancer prevention (in particular lung, breast and prostate cancers)
  • Heart disease protection
  • Stress reduction via action on the stress hormone Cortisol
  • Lowered bad cholesterol levels
  • Relief from Inflammatory Bowel Syndromes
  • Diabetes management (in Eastern cultures green tea has been traditionally used to control blood sugar in the body)
  • Weight loss by suppressing appetite, boosting the metabolism, increasing the rate in which fats are oxidized and thermogenesis (the process of heat production in humans)
  • Improved joint health via its anti-inflammatory action
  • Better skin health including protection against sun damage
  • Increased mental alertness
  • Better gastrointestinal health by restoring the natural healthy balance of bacteria in the gut.
  • Positive effect on fungal and yeast infections
  • People have been infusing tea in water for well over 4000 years but it is only recently (at least in the West) that people are starting to uncover the many ways in which a green tea diet can promote overall health and well-being.

Incorporate a few cups of green tea into your diet every day and you’ll be doing wonders for your health. For more information on diets and foods that can help with treating fungal and yeast infections head on over to FungusFacts.com
